About Mark Mendel RPT
Mark Mendel began his apprenticeship with John Svec Master Piano Technician in August of 1979 at Piano Rebuilders of Mountain View, CA. He learned the intricacies of the instrument from the inside out starting with disassembling a classic early 1900s upright piano, refinishing the outside, gutting and re-stringing the inside and completely replacing the key action. That piano was bought by a church friend and is still being used today.
Mark went on to rebuild many grand pianos as well, including Steinway, Baldwin, Mason & Hamlin, Chickering, Knabe, Weber and many more. After 2 1/2 years of refining his tuning technique under his mentor's tutelage he attained top scores in the Piano Technician's Guild tuning test in all categories.
He has been a certified Registered Piano Technician of the Piano Technician's Guild since 1982. After taking over the shop in 1986 Mark contracted with the newly opened Shoreline Amphitheater to be their Concert Tuner. Over the years he has tuned for many artists from the San Francisco Symphony with John Nakamatsu to Elton John, Billy Joel, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Carlos Santana and Bon Jovie just to name a few. The building where Piano Rebuilders (now Piano Services Unlimited) was then was sold in 1992 and Mark moved to a smaller shop/storefront in downtown San Jose for 5 years.
He now works out of his residence in Sunnyvale, CA caring for over 1,000 satisfied clients per year. He has been "making pianos sing" for over 33 years and intends to keep at it for many more.
